
Many Canadians will be voting in new ridings when they head to the polls in the upcoming federal election.
Ridings, also known as electoral districts, are reviewed every 10 years to reflect population shifts across the country. Elections Canada spokesperson Diane Benson explains why these changes happen.
Audio PlayerIn total, only 48 of the previous 338 ridings remain the same. Five new ridings were added, while one in Toronto was eliminated. Benson says this redistribution has led to significant changes.
Audio PlayerLocally, Peterborough-Kawartha has been renamed Peterborough and now includes the city, along with Otonabee-South Monaghan, Asphodel-Norwood, and Hiawatha First Nation. Meanwhile, Northumberland-Peterborough South has been renamed Northumberland-Clarke. Benson says voters should take note of the changes before casting their ballots.
