With power still being restored throughout the city and county, Peterborough Public Health has issued an advisory around food safety.
A typical fridge will keep food cold for 12 to 24 hours. Refrigerated food may be unsafe to consume after two hours at 4 degrees Celsius or warmer. Throw out any food that is discoloured or smells as well as discard any hazardous foods, such as dairy and meat products.
Public health suggests transferring perishable food items, such as milk, deli meat and cheese, to a cooler with ice, and to replace the ice frequently to keep cold.
Meanwhile, a typical freezer will keep food frozen for one to two days, provided you keep the freezer door closed as much as possible. If freezer food is thawed, it’s not to consume and should be discarded.
