School buses are cancelled across Peterborough City and County today as another round of freezing rain and heavy rainfall moves into the region.
Environment Canada has issued both a Freezing Rain Warning and a Rainfall Warning for the area. Freezing rain is expected throughout the day, with ice accretion between 4 to 8 mm on some surfaces. While not as severe as the ice storm over the weekend, gusty winds of up to 60 km/h could worsen tree damage.
As temperatures rise later in the day, the freezing rain will transition to rain, which could be heavy at times. Between 20 to 40 mm of rainfall is expected from this afternoon through Thursday morning, with localized amounts exceeding 50 mm in areas affected by thunderstorms. With the ground already saturated, localized flooding is possible.
This follows two days of school closures for both the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board due to lingering impacts from the weekend ice storm.
Residents are urged to use caution on roads and sidewalks, as conditions may become icy and slippery before the temperature rises above freezing.
