The Riverview Park and Zoo remains closed to the public following significant damage caused by a recent ice storm and extended power outages.
The closure affects all areas of the park, including animal exhibits, the parking lot, playground, disc golf course, and surrounding green spaces. Officials report extensive tree damage, with hanging limbs and downed power lines posing safety risks. The park will remain closed until repairs are completed and the site is deemed safe for visitors.
“The tree damage and damage to property is worse than what we saw during the 2022 derecho storm,” said Cathy Mitchell, Manager and Curator of Riverview Park and Zoo. “However, I am very proud of our Riverview Park and Zoo team and grateful for the support of the City of Peterborough’s Water Distribution team, who are helping us tackle the mammoth task of clearing the site.”
Despite the extensive destruction, Mitchell confirmed that all animals and staff remain safe. “We are very happy to report that all our animals and staff are well, and there were no injuries due to the storm. We have approximately 150 animals under our care, and we continue to be proud of the Animal Care and Parks teams, who, without interruption, continue to provide top-class care to the animals who live here.”
No reopening date has been announced as crews continue to assess the damage and conduct cleanup operations. Visitors are encouraged to monitor official channels for updates on when the facility will be safe to reopen.
