The New Canadians Centre has officially taken ownership of the historic St. James United Church building at 221 Romaine Street, solidifying its long-standing presence in the space it has called home since 2012.
Originally constructed in 1917, the building has served the Christian community for over a century. Now, it enters a new chapter as a community hub supporting newcomers to Canada. The St. James congregation and St. James Players theatre group will continue to use the space as tenants.
“This place has become where newcomers find the support and strength to launch their new lives,” said Andy Cragg, Executive Director of NCC. “It is a place where lifelong friendships are forged.”
The centre has grown significantly since relocating from Sherbrooke Street, welcoming thousands of immigrants and hosting cultural events, shared meals, and community celebrations.
Minister Julie van Haaften of St. James United Church called NCC “an exceptional tenant and partner,” adding, “It means a great deal to us to have a community organization that respects and loves the building as we do.”
Although NCC is not a religious organization, it shares values with the church, including a commitment to inclusivity and community building. NCC will continue to manage rentals of the space, including Wesley Hall, the gym, and meeting rooms.
The New Canadians Centre offers settlement support, employment services, language programs, and youth activities, and is a founding member of the Peterborough Immigration Partnership.
