Peterborough city council has endorsed a full review of Council compensation, paving the way for significant changes to remuneration for the 2026–2030 term.
The review recommends a reset in how base pay is determined, using a benchmark of 15 comparator municipalities. Current compensation for both the Mayor and Councillors falls on the low end of that spectrum — at the 7.1 and 14.2 percentile respectively.
Council has endorsed targeting the 75th percentile, which would place the Mayor’s 2026 base pay at an estimated $147,631 and each Councillor’s at $54,991, indexed using CUPE collective bargaining settlements.
For comparison, in 2025 the Mayor is expected to earn $92,373 plus $23,341 in benefits. Councillors are slated to receive $36,185 plus $10,728 in benefits, with no pay for serving on boards or committees — unlike the Mayor, who receives additional board remuneration.
The review also recommends a new vehicle and transportation allowance for the upcoming term — $6,000 for the Mayor and $3,000 for each Councillor — along with mileage reimbursement for conference and training travel.
