Trustees with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board have voted in favour of reviewing procurement practices to prioritize Canadian-made products, following a motion passed at Tuesday evening’s board meeting.
The motion, introduced by Trustee Cathy Abraham, directs the Board’s Resource Committee to evaluate and propose changes to the current procurement policy at its next meeting. Staff have also been tasked with developing policy adjustments that would favour the purchase of Canadian goods wherever feasible.
“We are pleased to support this motion that will bring a focus to our buying power and procurement practices and policies in supporting Canadian companies and businesses not only through these challenging times but on a go forward basis,” said Jaine Klassen Jeninga, Chairperson of the Board.
The motion also aligns with recent Ontario government directives restricting school boards and other provincial entities from procuring goods from U.S.-based businesses.
