Trent University is joining Winter Grab, a first-of-its-kind winter research effort to collect and analyze ice and water samples from all five of the Great Lakes.
This week, upwards of 30 locations are expected to be sampled by research teams across all five of the lakes, with the goal of painting a picture of water quality and life in and under the ice.
Dr. Maggie Xenopoulos from Trent says climate change is a big reason why the research is being done.
Dr. Xenopoulos says it all started after a research paper a few years ago.
Professor Xenopoulos, who is one of two Canada Research Chairs involved in the project, will be leading the analyses of dissolved organic carbon for ice and water samples from every site.
16 different institutions are taking part in the study, with Trent being just one of three located in Canada.
