The City of Peterborough is gearing up to celebrate June as Recreation and Parks Month, a movement aimed at highlighting the numerous benefits of recreation and parks for physical, social, and environmental health. Throughout the month, the city will promote various local programs, events, parks, and facilities that are open to everyone, encouraging residents to make the most of the opportunities available to them.
Recognizing the positive impact of parks and recreation on personal health, wellbeing, and the development of strong communities, the city aims to foster social inclusion and enhance the quality of life for its residents. With an array of free activities, events, and giveaways scheduled throughout June, people of all ages and abilities will find something to engage in.
Councillor Lesley Parnell, Chair of the City’s Arenas, Parks, and Recreation Portfolio, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “The City of Peterborough is well known for our incredible green spaces, the Otonabee River and Little Lake, parks, and recreational/sports opportunities. These are precious to us. Please get out and enjoy the many free events and activities to expand your quality of life in our beautiful city.”
The calendar of events for June promises a diverse range of options to cater to various interests. Highlights include the “All abilities Try It Pickleball” event on June 1, encouraging inclusivity and participation, as well as the Dragon Boat Festival on June 10, a family-friendly occasion that supports cancer patients at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
Other notable events include the Wellness Centre Client Appreciation Day on June 12, a Power Yoga session in the park on June 17, and a Zumba Dance Party at the Quaker Foods City Square on June 23. The month concludes with the “Let’s Bike” event in partnership with Green Up, taking place at Quaker Foods City Square on June 29.
In addition to these specific events, ongoing programs and facilities offer a wealth of options for residents to explore. The Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market, located in Quaker Foods City Square, operates every Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., providing fresh produce and a vibrant community atmosphere.
For animal enthusiasts, the Riverview Park and Zoo offers an opportunity to visit various creatures while enjoying the largest playground in the city. Skateboard enthusiasts can head to the local Skateboard Park at 560 McDonnel St. to kick off their summer with some thrilling rides.
Sports enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the city boasts over 80 fields and courts, made available through partnerships with local school boards, Fleming College, and Trent University. Residents are encouraged to visit their nearest park and try out a new sport.
With the arrival of summer, splash pads throughout the city have opened their doors, welcoming visitors from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. For those seeking sun, sand, and waves, the public beaches at Beavermead Park and Rogers Cove will open on July 1, staffed with trained lifeguards from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
Additionally, community wading pools will open on the same day, operating from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, offering a refreshing option for families and individuals seeking aquatic enjoyment.
