The Peterborough Jr. A Lakers are poised for an exciting season as they prepare for their home opener next Friday against the Six Nations Arrows.
Following a disappointing end to last year’s campaign, the team has made significant strides in the off-season to ensure a stronger, more cohesive unit for the upcoming campaign.
Head Coach Robert Hope emphasized the renewed sense of urgency and accountability that has infused the team since their early exit last season, noting the dedication and hard work that players and staff have put in during training camp.
This year, the Lakers boast a blend of youthful energy and seasoned experience, with the team looking especially strong between the pipes with goaltender Cole Gervais, who Hope says did all the right things in the off season to get ready for this summer.
The coaching staff has also undergone changes, with Eric Shewell and Jake Withers stepping away for family commitments. To help with the void the Lakers have added Curtis Conley, a seasoned player with experience in the junior and professional ranks. Conley’s expertise, especially in defense and transition play, is expected to be a valuable asset.
Alongside him, offensive coach Turner Evans returns, bringing his extensive knowledge from NCAA to pro levels. Jeff Ralph and Taylor Evans continue to be instrumental in scouting and player development, ensuring that the Lakers have a pipeline of talent from across Ontario.
With all the right pieces seemingly in place, Hope feel his team is ready for a serious run at the Minto Cup, the national championship trophy that has eluded them since they last hoisted it in 2006.
Friday’s home opener against Six Nations is set for 8pm at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
