The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers took a 2-0 series lead in their MSL Quarterfinal series on Saturday night with a 14-4 win over the Owen Sound North Stars at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
Thomas Hoggarth, Joe Resetarits, Rob Hellyer and Turner Evans combined to lead the offense with a total of 29 points between them.
Even after a long afternoon of bus travel, the Lakers came out energetic, scoring five times in the first period and once again chasing North Stars starting goaltender Kaleb Martin.
Hellyer’s second goal of the game put the Lakers up 6-0 before Owen Sound’s Jake McNabb got his team on the board. Jonathan Peshko also scored for the North Stars, but Hellyer’s hat trick and Hoggarth’s second goal of the game sent Peterborough to the dressing room up 8-2.
In the third, the Lakers rattled off six goals in a row, including three on the power play. Resetarits had a hat trick in the period, Hoggarth added two more, and Joey Cupido scored a transition marker.
Landon Kells made 35 saves, perhaps none better than on a 2-on-0 break late in the first period. In the third, he stopped Jake Gasperetti on a breakaway and the rebound from Tyler Halls.
Peshko led the North Stars with a pair of goals and one assist. Ethan Woods made 13 saves in 44 minutes of action.
Game 3 is back in Peterborough this coming Thursday, July 25 at the usual 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the box office. If necessary, Game 4 will be back in Owen Sound on Saturday, July 27.
In the other MSL Quarterfinals, Cobourg and Oakville are tied 1-1 and Brooklin leads Brampton 1-0.
