An event held annually to remember those lost to a drug overdose is fast approaching.
Starting at 1 p.m. on August 30th at Millennium Park, members of Moms Stop The Harm will gather alongside representatives of local agencies on the front lines of drug harm education and mitigation. Among them will be Gail Perry, whose daughter Jody Smith died from a drug overdose in 2018 at age 32.
Perry says the loss of her daughter stays with her every day but especially now.
Perry says the event goes to great pains to be non-judgmental.
Perry adds it breaks her heart when she hears of the monthly overdose death numbers compiled by Peterborough Public Health, but is encouraged by increased efforts to ensure those using are doing so safely.
Meanwhile, a flag marking International Overdose Awareness Day will be raised August 21st at City Hall. That 10 a.m. ceremony will be followed by a similar event at the Peterborough police station.
