Wellsfarm, a family-owned and operated dairy farm located near Peterborough, is home to a large herd of animals, most of those purebred Holsteins.
At the helm is Niels van Beek, who is the second generation of his family to own and operate the farm, but the fifth generation dating back to when the family dairy farmed in The Netherlands where van Beek was born in the village of Well – hence the farm’s name.
van Beek initially studied biochemistry at the University of Ottawa before pursuing his passion for dairy farming, attaining a diploma in agriculture from Kemptville College and then a Bachelor of Science from the University of Guelph, focusing on dairy sciences.
Local dairy farming, says van Beek, is “in a pretty good place” but the landscape has changed, bringing new challenges to the fore.
