The Peterborough Petes are looking to turn things around after an 0-7 start to the season.
The Petes faced their toughest challenge last week, with a grueling three games in three nights. Despite the team’s efforts, they couldn’t secure a win, losing to Sudbury, Guelph, and Owen Sound to remain as the only winless team in the Canadian Hockey League.
Head Coach Rob Wilson said that despite their winless weekend, there were many positives from his squad, notably their improved discipline, which he had stressed to his players that they needed to work on. Wilson also acknowledged that playing three games in three days took a toll on the young roster, particularly during the third period of their third game
Wilson praised his starting goaltenders, Liam Sztuska and Zach Bowen, for their strong performances over the weekend, saying he’s happy and confident with both veteran netminders.
Looking ahead, the Petes face a tough challenge with two back-to-back games against the Oshawa Generals, a team loaded with NHL prospects and championship aspirations. Wilson emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and minimizing mistakes, especially against Oshawa’s high-powered offense. He noted that giving away unnecessary penalties could quickly turn into costly opportunities for Oshawa.
Despite the slow start to the season, Wilson is optimistic that the team will improve as the year progresses, adding that the focus remains on sticking to the process and continuing to develop the team’s younger players.
The Petes will aim for their first win of the season tomorrow when they begin their home-and-home series against the Generals. Game time is 7pm at the PMC. You can listen to that game live on Freq 90.5.
