The Peterborough Police Service is adjusting its approach to address rising concerns from residents and businesses around Trinity Church, home to One City Peterborough’s drop-in and shelter services.
Police Chief Stuart Betts noted a sharp increase in calls for service in the area, rising from 168 in 2022 to 700 so far in 2024. Betts stated the new measures aim to balance support for vulnerable populations with community safety.
Key changes include suspending the ‘Safer Public Spaces’ approach, meaning individuals observed using illicit drugs in public will be arrested. Police will also investigate and potentially charge individuals for offences like trespassing or possessing stolen property.
While discussions continue between the police, One City Peterborough, and the City of Peterborough to establish long-term solutions, Betts emphasized the importance of ensuring safety for everyone in the community. A joint update is expected once an agreement is reached.
