With January designated Alzheimer Awareness Month, the local society has partnered with a number of restaurants to raise money for counseling, education and recreational services for those living with the disease and their caregivers.
Until the end of the month, Dining For Dementia is seeing a portion of meal costs at Hanoi House, Allen Gourmet Coffee and Eatery, La Mesita, Bobo Tea, Brickhouse Craft Burger and The Favourite Greek go to the society.
Society executive director Jen Johnston says the fundraiser hopes to build on the success of a similar initiative in Durham Region.
More than 14,000 people in the society’s catchment area have Alzheimer’s disease or some form of dementia, with that number expected to increase by a staggering 65 percent come 2030. Johnstone says all funds raised by the campaign will go to work locally helping clients and their caregivers.
Johnstone says while the rising number of people dealing with Alzheimer’s and dementia keeps her awake at night, the society’s key message that it is possible to live well with the disease is one that provides great hope for those diagnosed.
