The annual Steve Richey Memorial Tournament of Champions is once again underway in Peterborough, drawing nearly 60 teams to the area. With teams from across the province and even as far as Newfoundland, this year’s tournament will once again showcase some of the best hockey talent at the U16 and U18 levels.
Tournament Director Seamus McDougall says the event has become a yearly fixture for a lot of teams, with this being their final tournament before the playoffs.
The tournament, which will feature games at every arena in Peterborough, as well as Friday games at the Asphodel-Norwood Arena, is not just a big event for the players and their families but also for the community. With the number of teams participating and limited amount of hotels in the city, McDougall says it’s not just Peterborough that will see an economic boost from the tournament
In addition to the economic boost, the tournament also benefits from being able to utilize the newly opened Miskin Law Community Complex, which will host games for the first time since opening on Wednesday.
Named in honour of former OHL goalie and Petes scout, Steve Richie, the Tournament of Champions runs through the entire weekend, with semifinals and finals taking place on Sunday at the Healthy Planet Arena.
