
Ontario Provincial Police have arrested an 83-year-old Peterborough man following a nearly year-long investigation that began with information from the RCMP in New Brunswick.
Caledon OPP launched the probe on May 11th, 2024, leading to a search warrant executed on March 4th at a Peterborough property. Officers were assisted by the OPP Explosives Disposal Unit and the military’s 8th Wing Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit from CFB Trenton.
John Butcher faces multiple charges, including possession of stolen property, unauthorized possession of firearms, and possession of explosives for unlawful purposes. He remains in custody and is set to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on March 13th.
The investigation continues by the Peterborough County OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. Assistance was provided by the Grey Bruce OPP Crime Unit, Caledon OPP, Peterborough County OPP, OPP Community Street Crime Units from Caledon and City of Kawartha Lakes, OPP Emergency Response Team, and OPP Provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit.
